The underlying theme that connects these books into a series is that they all have protagonists that suffer from mental illnesses. The intention was to use key imagery that is associated with the novels but at the same time the imagery would not be too confusing for those who have not read the books. The imagery is significant in that it is tied to the character's mental state. On top of that, each cover is a visualization of famous phrases, the horse's ass, a broken record, and the world being turned upside-down. These phrases also describe aspects of the protagonists.
